Inguinal anatomy
Medical Tattoo: Superficial Inguinal Anatomy: Inguinal Ligament: Location: Extends from the anterior superior iliac spine (ASIS) to the pubic tubercle. Function: Acts as a support structure and forms the base of the inguinal canal. Inguinal Canal: Location: A passage in the lower abdominal wall running parallel to the inguinal ligament. Contents: In males: Contains the spermatic cord, which includes the vas deferens, testicular artery, and other structures. In females: Contains the round ligament of the uterus. Function: Allows structures to pass between the abdominal cavity and the external genitalia. Superficial Inguinal Ring: Location: An opening in the external oblique aponeurosis located above the inguinal ligament. Function: The exit point of the inguinal canal, through which the spermatic cord or round ligament emerges. External Oblique Muscle and Aponeurosis: Location: The external oblique muscle is the outermost muscle layer of the abdominal wall. Its aponeurosis forms part of the inguinal canal and contributes to the formation of the superficial inguinal ring. Function: Provides support and reinforcement to the abdominal wall and the inguinal canal. Femoral Artery and Vein: Location: Located just inferior to the inguinal ligament. Function: The femoral artery supplies blood to the lower limb, while the femoral vein returns deoxygenated blood from the lower limb to the heart. Saphenous Vein: Location: The great saphenous vein is visible on the medial side of the leg and thigh, and it drains into the femoral vein just below the inguinal ligament. Function: It is a major superficial vein of the lower limb, important for venous return from the leg. Lymph Nodes: Location: Superficial inguinal lymph nodes are located in the groin area, along the inguinal ligament. Function: They are part of the lymphatic system and are responsible for filtering lymphatic fluid and fighting infections. Psoas Major Muscle: Location: Though not directly visible, it is deep to the inguinal ligament and runs along the lumbar spine and pelvis. Function: Flexes the hip and helps with movement of the thigh.
